Los Angeles Museums

There are many museums in California and the museums in Los Angeles are among the best in the world. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is an impressive building on Wilshire Boulevard in the Miracle Mile district of the city. The works date from the earliest known until the present day and number over 250,000. In addition to exhibitions, the museum hosts concerts and film screenings. It opened in 1961 in its present location. A major renovation plan is currently underway. Highlights of the displays include the Pavilion of Japanese Art, the Sculpture Garden of Rodin bronzes and Roman and Greek artifacts. Modern works are represented by artists, such as Picassso, Henry Moore, and William de Kooning. The museum also contains one of the most comprehensive collections of Latin American artwork.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County has an excellent reputation for its collection and research. It opened in 1913 in Exposition Park and its architecture was greatly praised. The museum re-located to Wilshire Boulevard in 1965. Today, it houses almost 33 million specimens and the various departments include many different branches of science. These include Archeology, Botany, History, Mineralogy, Ornithology and Paleontology. One of the most fascinating exhibits is the Discovery Center and Insect Zoo. The Los Angeles Maritime Museum is situated in Los Angeles Harbor, San Pedro. For anyone interested in local history, it is one of the best Los Angeles museums to visit. It opened in 1980 in what was once a ferry terminal building. There is a fascinating combination of exhibits, including models of merchant ships from the past and a working ham radio station. There are displays on the history of commercial diving in the area and information on the fishing industry of San Pedro, which used to be a major economic force. The Navy Hall has a number of models of large ships.

The Children's Museum of Los Angeles was set up as a fun place for children to learn. It opened in 1979 and is currently re-locating to new premises in Hansen Dam in the San Fernando Valley. The museum is closed therefore, until the move is complete. However, educational programs for the local community continue uninterrupted.
